Most mountain Cabernet asks for patience. This one asks for a corkscrew.
If you're new to Patria, this label is the passion project of Tony Biagi, one of Napa Valley's most accomplished winemakers. His résumé includes Duckhorn, PlumpJack, CADE, Hourglass, Neotempo, and a roster of consulting clients that reads like a who's who of California wine. Patria allows Tony to focus on exceptional vineyard sites, trusted relationships, and wines that overdeliver. What we love most about Tony's wines is that they never sacrifice pleasure in pursuit of prestige. While many luxury Cabernets seem destined for decades of cellar time, Tony has a knack for crafting wines that are every bit as serious as they are enjoyable. Which brings us to The Nunnery, Patria's newest addition to the portfolio.
In a category increasingly dominated by Cabernet built for future drinking, The Nunnery is refreshingly present-tense. Sourced from a dramatic Moon Mountain vineyard and blended from 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 offers layers of blackberry, black cherry, crushed herbs, and the mineral character that makes mountain-grown Cabernet so compelling. Yet despite its serious credentials—including 21 months in 80% new French oak—the wine is remarkably open-knit and expressive today. The tannins are polished, the fruit is plush, and the entire package feels welcoming rather than imposing.
At $75 per bottle, The Nunnery may be one of the most satisfying Cabernet values we've tasted this year. The quality is undeniable, the source is impeccable, and best of all, there's no reason to wait.
