Bott Frigyes Kékfrankos Južnoslovenská Slovakia 2024

If you love discovering wines from the fringes of Europe's great historic regions, bottles that feel both ancient and totally new, Bott Frigyes is a name to remember. Although the estate lies in modern-day Slovakia, the cultural and viticultural roots here are unmistakably Hungarian. This borderland has been growing grapes for centuries, long before the idea of "Old World wine" was divided up by today's maps.

On the southern slopes of the Muzsla Hills, overlooking the Garam River, Bott Frigyes and his son, Frici, farm 10 hectares of vines with full biodynamic intention. Clay soils over volcanic bedrock and limestone give their wines a natural tension, while the river tempers extremes, radiating warmth on frigid nights and keeping the vineyard healthy through unpredictable seasons.

Among all the varieties they cultivate, Kékfrankos is the heartbeat of the estate. You may know it as Blaufränkisch (a name Bott himself would probably prefer we retire), but here, Kékfrankos is treated not as a workhorse grape, but as the purest expression of place.

The Frigyes family's winemaking leans traditional, gentle, and intuitive: native-yeast fermentations, zero temperature control, prolonged lees contact, and no fining or filtration. Their signature "hamberger" method—layering whole clusters, foot-trod berries, and destemmed fruit—adds nuance and lift without muting the variety's natural spice.

The 2023 vintage is vibrant and wildly drinkable. Expect the classic black-pepper snap that defines Kékfrankos, wrapped in supple dark cherry fruit and accents of cacao, clove, and warm allspice. The palate is bright and agile, carrying that punchy spice through a long, energetic finish. It's the kind of red wine that feels equally at home next to winter comfort food or enjoyed on its own while you cook. Pair it with smoked sausages, roasted root vegetables, paprika-driven dishes, or a hunk of aged cheese. At 13.5% alcohol, this is a beautifully balanced bottle that delivers both character and serious charm.
