Sphaerics Overline Chardonnay Carneros 2024

We still remember the first time we tasted Sphaerics. There were no scores, no headlines, no hype—just a glass and a conviction that Brian Ball and Laura Jones were onto something serious. We became the first retailer to back the project because the potential was undeniable, and that early bet paid off when Sphaerics quickly emerged as one of California’s breakout Chardonnay producers.

That vote of confidence is looking even smarter today, because Sphaerics isn’t just maintaining momentum—they’re accelerating it. Brian and Laura just secured a 13-acre Sonoma Coast vineyard near Occidental, and beginning with the 2025 vintage, this estate fruit will start feeding their lineup. For a young label already turning heads, that’s a serious statement of intent. But the headline today? The debut of their first Pinot Noir which is every bit as compelling as their Chardonnays.

The duo’s pedigree explains a lot. Together at Skipstone (Brian as GM, Laura as winemaker), they’ve honed a standard most estates spend decades chasing. Before that, Laura trained in one of California’s most exacting Chardonnay cellars, Aubert, mastering how to harness the grape’s precision while imprinting her own signature. That foundation shows in every bottle they release: focused, intentional, and quietly confident

The 2024 Overline is a sophomore release coming from a Lede family-owned vineyard in Carneros. Sphaerics' coolest site thrives in the clay loam soils of this distinctive region, influenced by the morning fog and gentle breeze of the San Pablo Bay. This unique climate combined with tried and true clones (Hyde Wente, Old Wente, and Mt. Eden) results in a wine that has both acid and creamy mouthfeel dialed up to an 11. This wine is the whole plotline, from start to finish. Brioche, lemon curd, green apple, and baked pie crust define the palate. This wine has exceptional texture and coats your mouth before leading to acidity that builds steadily to a medium-plus peak.
