Domaine Philippe Gavignet Bourgogne Rouge 2023

Domaine Philippe Gavignet is a family affair based in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, with the fourth generation at the helm.  Since the 1930s, they've farmed their 10 hectares, many of which are categorized as vieilles vignes, having been planted between 1920 and 1950.  The finesse and harmony of this estate’s honest, hand-crafted wines have us truly enamored.  Not to mention how refreshing it is that Philippe is a “salt of the earth” sort of winemaker. He can’t stand pretense; casual but serious, Philippe is a true artisan. Curiously, Gavignet remains an insider’s secret, while bigger names in the village garner the attention (and demand ever-higher prices). Yet no other producer even comes close to capturing the true character of terroir as Philippe Gavignet does.

At the time, 2023 was the hottest vintage on record for Burgundy but with impressive rainfall and a few hail events.  The reds are juicy, fruit-forward, with refined tannins and moderate acidity.  The wines shows notes of black cherry, autumn leaves, and bell pepper, with ripe, silky tannins and red plum fruit on the palate.
