Sown Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2023

Sunrise drifts across the chaparral slopes of Mount George, and the fog from San Pablo Bay curls through the terraced Cabernet Sauvignon blocks, brushing the vines with cool morning mist. Here, at 1,100 feet, Sown Estate’s grapes have been quietly developing for over three decades, nestled on gravelly loam and volcanic bedrock that coax small, intensely flavored clusters from the vine. This is a place where patience is rewarded, and where the vineyard’s character is unmistakable.
When Andrew and Alexis’ family purchased the five-acre estate in 2017, the vines were silent collaborators, their fruit sold to other producers. But life on the land has a way of nudging you forward. A chance request from a close friend to store an empty tank in the property’s cave became a spark: Andrew, who had lived among the vines for years without imagining himself a winemaker, decided to experiment. With guidance from generous friends and mentors, he discovered a love for the craft and a fascination for coaxing the vineyard’s voice into the bottle. By 2022, the couple took their first full vintage under their own label, Sown, and 2023 saw them expanding thoughtfully, solidifying themselves as a fully hands-on, two-person operation, with every decision made in their vineyard or cave.
The 2023 Estate Cabernet from Sown is one of the most special single-site expressions we’ve tasted in some time. Every decision, from vine to barrel, reflects the couple’s curiosity, care, and time spent living alongside these vines. Harvested in selective blocks, fermented on ambient yeasts among the vines, and aged in mostly neutral oak, capturing the site and season without adornment. Low in alcohol (13.6%), it carries the elegance of Napa’s bygone days: integrated tannins, lively acidity, and precise, balanced structure. The wine is indulgent without heaviness, restrained yet undeniably expressive, the kind that reflects a vineyard, a family, and a vision realized. It’s a wine that carries the vineyard, the vintage, and the people who tend it in every sip — a bottle not to be missed by collectors, and already turning heads among Napa’s most passionate enthusiasts.
