The sub-region of Mamoiada, where Cantina Mertzeoro resides, is steeped in a rich history with traditions dating back to BC, and the industry that reigns supreme is wine. Within the small village of 2,000 inhabitants, there are 300 wine producers, which means that if you’re a resident of Mamoiada, you are connected to the surrounding vines and the wines they produce. Cantina Mertzeoro is a relatively young family-run winery, having operated over the last two decades with five hectares of indigenous Sardinian varietals. Keeping up with traditions is at the top of their minds as proud members of the local winemaker’s association, which promotes preserving cultural heritage linked to vines and wines in the community.
Ghirada refers to a “plot of land” in the Sardinian dialect spoken in Mamoiada, and growers use it to refer to specific vineyards. The Ghirada Mulinu is almost 600 meters above sea level, roughly 2,000 feet. With its southeast exposure, the grapes enjoy extended sun to ripen with cool sea breezes blowing through to prevent scorching and maintain acidity. The vines planted here are 100% Cannonau, a grape local to Sardinia, and the genetic match of Grenache. It has long been believed Cannonau was brought to Sardinia in the 14th century by the Kingdom of Aragon; however, recent conflicting studies suggest it may have originated on the island. Of the tens of native varietals in Sardinia, Cannonau is most widely planted and prized for its freshness and red fruit.
Mertzeoro’s 2022 Ghirada Mulinu berries macerated for 15 days before spontaneous fermentation. After 12 months of aging in oak casks ranging in size from 560L to 1005L, the wine spent two additional months mellowing in the bottle before release. Rainier and Bing cherry aromas on the nose mingle with purple florals, while the palate showcases wild raspberry, prunes, and dried Italian spices. The extended maceration built up sturdy tannins and the catching acidity fills the finish.
