Château d’Yquem is one of the most storied and revered wine estates in the world, synonymous with the pinnacle of sweet wine production. The château’s history stretches back to the late 16th century, when it became a distinct estate under the Sauvage family, later passing through marriage to the Lur Saluces family, who stewarded Yquem for more than two centuries. Its reputation was firmly cemented in 1855, when it was uniquely classified as Premier Cru Supérieur, a singular distinction that still sets it apart from every other Bordeaux estate. Today, Château d’Yquem remains a benchmark for balance, longevity, and complexity in dessert wines.
The estate is located in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, just south of Graves, on a hill overlooking the Ciron River—a geographic feature that is crucial to Yquem’s identity. The confluence of the cool Ciron and warmer Garonne Rivers creates autumn mists that encourage the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, on the vineyard’s Semillon- and Sauvignon Blanc–dominated plantings. These unique microclimatic conditions allow for extraordinarily concentrated grapes, harvested over multiple selective passes through the vineyard. Combined with meticulous viticulture and patient cellar practices, the terroir of Yquem yields wines of remarkable richness paired with vibrant acidity.
Château d’Yquem is also defined by its uncompromising standards, famously choosing not to produce a grand vin in years when quality does not meet expectations. Fermentation and aging take place in new French oak barrels, with élevage often lasting up to three years before bottling. The wines are celebrated not only for their opulence in youth but for their extraordinary capacity to age, often evolving gracefully for decades—sometimes more than a century—while retaining freshness and precision.
The 2017 Château d’Yquem reflects both the challenges and triumphs of its vintage, shaped by severe spring frosts that drastically reduced yields across Bordeaux. Despite these hardships, the remaining fruit achieved exceptional concentration, resulting in a wine of striking purity and poise. Aromas of candied citrus, pineapple, honey, and white flowers lead into a palate that balances lush sweetness with laser-focused acidity and mineral tension. Elegant rather than massive, the 2017 bottling is a refined expression of Yquem’s resilience, offering both immediate charm and the promise of long-term evolution in the cellar.
