Meursault, population 1,408, is a tiny hamlet nestled against the undulating vineyards of the Côte de Beaune, a few kilometers southeast of the city of Beaune. First mentioned on a map in 1094 by the monks of the nearby Abbey of Cluny, the multi-colored roof tiles of its medieval town hall are a local landmark. While wines here may be crafted from both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, the latter account for 98% of production, resulting in the fact that Meursault is practically synonymous with world-class white wine. Its Premier Cru and village-level “lieu-dit” vineyards consistently go toe-to-toe in blind tastings with nearby Grand Cru vineyards and have their own following among sommeliers.

Vincent Boyer is a fourth-generation winemaker from Meursault whose 20 acres of sustainably farmed vineyards also include a small plot in another nearby Burgundian white wine powerhouse: Puligny-Montrachet. The trailblazing Vincent has made a name for himself by not just focusing on his Premier Cru holdings but by also farming his village-level vineyards with the care and precision they deserve. This “single vineyard” mentality allows him to coax greatness out of each of his unique sites. Making strides in the vineyard enables Vincent to take a step back in the cellar to let each vineyard’s wine speak with its own voice.

The Chardonnay grapes for this Boyer Bourgogne Blanc are sourced from purchased fruit, as well as from three estate-owned plots in Meursault: ‘Sous la Velle,’ part of which is rated Meursault villages; ‘Les Pellans’ and ‘Les Grandes Coutures.’ The vines are 50-70 years old.
