Spottswoode Estate is one of Napa Valley’s elite estates. The property dates back to 1870 when a German immigrant and his wife, George and Catherine Schonewald, planted several acres at the foot of the Mayacamas range in St. Helena, christening the property “Esmeralda”, meaning emerald in Spanish. The property changed hands only a few times since then, with each “caretaker” honoring the beauty of the estate, while renaming it with homage to its surroundings or with a nod toward family: first Stonehurst, then Lyndenhurst, then Spottswoode, as it is called today by the Novak family. Year after year they produce wines of only the highest caliber that continue to evolve while resting in your cellar, becoming more valuable with each incredible release. In the built-to-last category, they are elegant and expressive if opened to enjoy now, but can also shine bright after several years of cellaring. Aron Weinkauf has proven once again that great wines are not made in a single vintage, instead, decades of experience emboldened by wisdom and forethought is the essence of Spottswoode’s dynamic character. Aron first joined Spottswoode in 2006 and quickly gained an understanding and appreciation for the land. Agriculturally inclined, Aron expanded on a quarter century of organic viticulture when he implemented biodynamic farming at the estate.
