We are so excited to share this tiny-production, hedonistic Cabernet project made by a legendary Napa Valley family and protégé of one of Napa Valley's present-day icons.
Continuing a family legacy is no simple task; keeping the same passion, dedication, and true devotion for one that began four generations ago and helped create what Napa Valley is today could be a mountainous endeavor. But not for the great-granddaughters of Cesare and Rosa Mondavi of Charles Krug Winery here in St. Helena. Starting at the age of 10, the Mondavi family sisters – Angelina, Alycia, Riana, and Giovanna Mondavi – spent their summers learning the family business. A typical summer day for the girls entailed doing odd jobs throughout the winery, which would include cleaning fermentation tanks, lugging hoses, pulling wine samples, and running data. These were the family chores at the time, but eventually, they led to a deep and sincere passion for the wine industry for each of these ladies.
After years of making wine alongside Jayson Woodbridge at his iconic winery Hundred Acre, Angelina Mondavi teamed up with her sisters and embarked on their private label project, Dark Matter. When creating the minute (~200 cases) brand, the sisters were committed to mastering the significance of hand-crafted wines with the same passion and devotion passed down by the three generations before them. All of the fruit comes from their 10-acre Rocky Ridge Vineyard, a property their parents, Marc and Janice Mondavi, purchased in 2001 at the top of Howell Mountain next to David Abreu's Lucia Vineyard. Covered in morning fog but with incredibly warm afternoon sunshine, the vines produce full-bodied grapes with showy, rich notes of bright red and dark fruit, mountain spice, silky tannins, and mouth-watering acidity. Meticulously farmed by Jim Barbour, this luscious Cabernet sees extensive oak aging, a style Angelina became accustomed to at Hundred Acre. The Dark Matter wines age for nearly four years in new French oak barrels before being released, and because of this commitment and patience by the ladies, their current releases are often immediately approachable, big, sexy, and voluptuous.
“Dark Matter Wines is a nod to our family traditions with an edgy twist.”
This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon delivers layer upon layer of juicy blueberry and blackberry coated with endless vanilla bean, rich, warm chocolate, sweet baking spice, and toasted oak. If BIG and RICH are two of your favorite wine-related words, this wine is for you! While the tannins are firm in the 2019, the body is supple and balanced with bright acidity. An impressive wine founded on the family's legacy and deep-rooted passion.
We feel honored to have been chosen to share this very special project with a small group of our clientele. With only 200 cases made, this allocation is extremely limited.
