Birdhorse Valdiguié Suisun Valley 2021

Birdhorse is a shiny new venture conceptualized by two fierce women while working a harvest in South Africa. Proprietors Corinne Rich and Katie Rouse were inspired by their invaluable experience in this unique wine-growing region that was, and still is, abuzz with young winemakers who seek to highlight lesser-known varietals. So, the women carried this verve home to the states and launched Birdhouse with the goal to champion the unsung heroes of grape varietals.  

Corinne and Katie work a stone’s throw away from each other by day; Corinne recently joined the team at Scribe as the Assistant Winemaker, and Katie is the Assistant Winemaker at Bedrock. Despite committing an incredible amount of passion to their day jobs, they still reserve enough gas in the tank to knock it out of the park with their fantastic new brand. The name Birdhouse intends to evoke a sense of adventure and whimsy rooted in the familiar - the same feeling that Corinne and Katie hope to express through each of their wines. It is a thing you can conjure in your mind’s eye, a faint outline, but requires a curious and open mind to fill in the details. That is Birdhouse: a desire for understanding, grounded by your own experience and perception yet fueled by your imagination.

The Suisun Valley sits just southeast of Napa Valley, at the base of the Vaca Mountain Range. The Valdiguié is sourced from the Back Road Vineyard which sits at the north end of the valley. It is comprised of Brentwood clay-loam soils and is part of the large alluvial fan that the valley rests on. Planted in the 1980's, these 40-year-old vines are farmed organically and produce bodacious bunches of juicy, red grapes. According to Corrine, “Our Valdiguié has never been one for timidness, but this year's iteration might literally burst out of your glass. The palate delivers a juiciness even Lizzo couldn't hold a candle too!” The wine explodes with flavors of blackberry, pomegranate, cherry cola, strawberry rhubarb pie and all the red and delicious fruits that stain your tablecloth with the hallmarks of meals outside. Line up the kebabs and invite over the neighbors - this wine will inspire your summer!
