Just down Highway 29 from ACME, along the western side of St. Helena, lies a wonderfully unflashy property making insane estate wines. Meet Young Inglewood Vineyards. The charming winery is home to a 16-acre historic vineyard on Inglewood Avenue that was first planted to Cabernet vines in the 1870s. In 2007, it was revived by the Young family who moved from Huntsville, Alabama in search of their lifelong dream to make wine. For Jim & Jacky Young, a shared passion for family, home cooked meals, travel and wine have all been a constant throughout their marriage; life’s precious moments and winemaking history that have enhanced their lives over the years. It was natural for them to pass this passion onto their son Scott, Young Inglewood's winegrower and winemaker, and to their daughter Mary. After college, Scott spent time traveling throughout Europe visiting wine regions in France, Italy, Germany and Spain. After working a harvest for Anne-Claude Leflaive in Burgundy, his love of wine was sealed and he returned to his home in Napa to work at Spottswoode and Long Meadow Ranch. Eagerly jumping into the driver’s seat of the family business in 2007, he moved to the property to immerse himself in the project, oversee the estate farming, and has produced a vintage every year since. Jim and Mary oversee winery operations, while Jacky can be found working in the cellar, tasting side by side with her son Scott to capture the unique Young Inglewood estate style, inspired by the celebrated wine of Bordeaux and the classic Napa Valley Cabs from the ‘70s and ‘80s.
Named for the Venn diagram appearing on the label, the inspiration for this labe was born out of conversations contemplating a bridge between the old way Napa Cabernet was grown and produced in the ‘70s and '80s and today's more modern winegrowing methods. This wine is about the intersection between old and new, and between the two vineyards from which the fruit is sourced. The 2018 is redolent with black cherries and berries, tantalizing earthy and savory notes, smooth tannins for structure. Enhanced by micro amounts of other carefully selected Bordeaux varietals, this is the Napa Cab you’ve been looking for.
