Russell Bevan needs no introduction, but we think he warrants one. Russell’s journey to getting such high praise from one of the world’s most highly regarded wine critics is anomalous. Born in Ukiah, CA, he earned his master’s degree in Philosophy from Gonzaga University, worked in Minneapolis selling dental equipment, wrote a syndicated wine column which was published in the Wine Spectator, and then, after moving back to California, became a self-taught winemaker with his first vintage in 2005. Since then, Russell has crafted over fifteen 100-point wines in his career, including Napa Valley’s only 100-point wine in 2011 (and one of only eight in the world for that vintage) awarded by Robert Parker. His accolades speak so loudly that his wines, when available, fly off the shelf and into collectors’ and passionate fans’ homes. Even if one hasn’t tasted his wines yet, the consistent 98–100-point scores confirm that they are superb choices and often utter perfection.

While Russell continues to consult and craft impeccable wines for several clients, his eponymous label, Bevan Cellars, was founded in 2005. Ontogeny is the perfect introduction to Russell’s winemaking style for Cabernet Sauvignon: unabashedly big, decadent, and intensely flavorful. The core of this blend is Cabernet Sauvignon, and it comes from some of the rockiest blocks at the legendary Tench Vineyard in Oakville. Like Russell, this Oakville vineyard’s reputation precedes it: Tench lies cheek by jowl with the iconic vineyards of RUDD Estate, Screaming Eagle, and Dalla Valle. This hedonistic wine is rife with aromas of savory and sweet fresh herbs, blackberry jam, and Madagascar vanilla. The palate unfurls with flavors of black Mission fig and Belgian chocolate, framed by grippy tannins. One taste and you’ll understand why all the critics are raving about Russell!
