“Mischievous.” “Whimsy.” “Elixir.” In naming her wines, Christelle Betton describes the range of emotions and feelings that her craft inspires – and that her wines deliver. Representing the third generation of her family to have answered the siren call of northern Rhône Syrah, Christelle’s vision is one of pure and refined fruit, inspired by the cool northern Mistral winds and stony personality of her family’s vineyards in La Roche de Glun. Her skills come naturally, having watched her grandfather and father care for their vines, plowing the fields by hand and farming as naturally as possible. Her family Domaine was launched in 1976, and she farms her 40-year-old vines organically; true to her renaissance spirit, she prefers the flexibility of allowing the earth to tell her what it needs, and when.

‘Caprice’ means whim in French, and we could suppose that it may describe the feelings of a passionate winemaker as she guides her vines through the challenges, and sometimes heartaches, of each vintage. This bottling is made up of a selection of the estate’s oldest vines. The soils here are speckled with piles of ‘galets roulés’, or large round rocks that are smooth to the touch. These rocks are a unique terrain characteristic commonly found along the Rhône River valley. For a vine to access both water and nutrients in such rocky soils, the roots must grow incredibly deep. To achieve this, Christelle plows her land by hand. This cuts any lateral growth from the roots and gives the competitive edge to the roots that grow deep into the earth. The 2019 Caprice, which is pure Syrah, is gently crushed by foot and raised in older French oak barrels for one year. Aromas of licorice, cocoa nibs, violets, and stewed black fruits fill the palate. Structured yet juicy with fine-grained tannins, this wine is mouth-filling and would pair perfectly with an autumn stew or a grilled flank steak.
