Futo is an ultra-premium winery located at the base of the Mayacamas Mountain Range in the Oakville AVA, affectionately known as the tenderloin region of Cabernet Sauvignon. Originally from Wichita, Kansas, Tom and Kyle Futo purchased what was formerly Oakford Vineyards in 2002, a 40-acre property where Heidi Barrett was once the resident winemaker. Coveted neighbors include Harlan Estate, BOND, and Far Niente, this unique property already had all the foundations for optimal elegance and style. Combine this distinguished vineyard site with the design of renowned architect, Howard Backen--a project that took 6 years--the prominence was beyond desirable. After establishing this property, they purchased another 40-acre property in the Stags Leap District, home to a 9-acre Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. The Futo's estate today in Oakville is predominantly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, with a touch of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Jason Exposto, with a degree in Viticulture and Enology from Lincoln University in New Zealand, has been crafting the Futo wines since their first vintage in 2008. Prior to joining the team, Jason had worked with Bordeaux varietals in New Zealand, Australia, France and here in Napa Valley alongside David Abreu in Napa Valley. He took over the entire operation just one year in, following the coaching from Mark Aubert in 2008 and 2009. Helianthus is immediate in expression, the bouquet of blackcurrant, raspberry coulis, and spring florals are complemented by touches of graphite from the Cabernet. The palate is layered, and packed with black and red fruit laced with minerals, crushed stone, and a touch of India ink. The finish fans out with a fine bed of tannin and accents of powdery blue fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot | 203 cases.
