Suara Wine Company is a collaboration between winemakers Drew Damskey and Sebastian Lane. Drew, a second-generation winemaker based in Sonoma (TR Elliott Vineyards and Palmeri Wine), was honored in 2017 as one of the San Francisco Chronicle’s Winemakers to Watch . Damskey was born into a life of wine: His grandparents owned a vineyard in Calistoga, and his father, Kerry Damskey, is a successful wine consultant who co-founded Sula Vineyards, the largest winery in India. Sebastian is both a barrel cooper and a real estate agent in the Napa Valley who has deep roots and profound connections in the wine industry going back several decades. Additionally, he is the Proprietor of the artistic Depiction wine and art project that he makes alongside his wife, Estelle.

Together, Drew and Sebastian launched this project with the intention of creating a wine that would stand out as one of the best valued Chardonnays on the market, delicious and affordable, intended to drink at any time, all the time. Drew and Sebastian relied on their many relationships across the wine industry to propel them into this new project. Hunting for the best vineyard blocks in the best sites available, exhausting all of their available resources to execute flawless winemaking techniques, and working with only the finest French oak barrels (this is where owning a cooperage comes in handy), allowing them the opportunity to deliver the most outstanding wine, and share it as widely as can be.

Presenting their 2020 Chardonnay, Seapig is an incredible value from California’s sun-drenched Sonoma Coast appellation! The rugged, wind-swept terrain found within this appellation is comprised of many different micro-climates that produce berries with various layers of flavor from riper, juicier notes to leaner, refreshing acidity and diverse and enticing aromas. We have been fortunate at ACME to taste some incredible wines from this region lately. Known for its dynamic Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the standard for quality remains very high in the Sonoma Coast AVA, but as is the case with Seapig, the price doesn’t have to! After much exploring, Drew and Sebastian found a small vineyard in the Russian River Valley with 35-year-old, dry farmed vines where they laid anchor and began their quest to produce an incredible California Chardonnay with all the best traits.

The Seapig names comes from early Nordic explorers who would describe what they saw to cartographers upon their return from the sea. On their journeys, they saw land masses of course, but they also saw many sea creatures. Without having names for them, the explorers referred to the animals they had seen in the water relative to what they knew on land. What was once called a Seapig is now known as a walrus. Sebastian and Drew felt these early sea animal descriptions which are found on the Carta Marina, the first map of the sea, are a fun way to underscore the importance of the ocean’s influence on the wines of California’s Sonoma Coast.

Hand harvested early in the season to capture the verve and freshness of the Russian River Valley, this wine was then aged in new French oak barrels, exclusively. Balancing richness and an enticing mouthfeel with bright acidity and mineral notes, Drew and Sebastian have achieved what many winemakers only dream of for their Chardonnay: volume without weight! Aromas of Granny Smith apple, hyacinth, and white jasmine give way to a clean entry offering up white pear, lychee, and lime meringue flavors. With an over-the-top plush texture, the seamless, prolonged finish is both clean and full. This wine is remarkably easy to drink, and offers a ton of bang for the buck! Juicy, sun-kissed California fruit; elegant structure and well-integrated new French Oak; a soft, supple mouthfeel and a lively, lengthy finish.
