Together, the name “ThereAfter” and this fantasy-inspired label conjure images of myths and legends, so let us recount for you the fairy tale behind this exquisite Sauvignon Blanc. James, a curious American abroad, and Lorenza, an adventurous Italian, met and fell in love while studying winemaking in France. Many moons later and now married, between the two of them, they have four winemaking degrees and have worked for sixteen wineries in eight different countries. After satisfying their wanderlust by roaming the great vineyards of the world, they decided to plant roots here in the lovely, sun-dappled kingdom of Napa Valley. They are passionate about regenerative farming and are now in the process of rehabilitating three tiny vineyards- two in Saint Helena and one in Calistoga. But they also source fruit from exceptional vineyards and the grape growers that inspire them throughout Northern California. Working with outside vineyards gives the duo more insight into farming innovations for their own plots of vines. Robert Louis Stevenson famously likened fine Californian wine to “bottled poetry.” For James and Lorenza, wine is less a poem and more a storyline with a past, present, and future. The same holds true in the vineyards, where memories of past vintages, the current stage of growth, and future seasons factor into each decision they make.

ThereAfter Wine Company started as a side project, with the couple lingering after work at the winery to tinker around with some special home-brew. Moonlighting gave a purpose to their passions which entail organic viticulture, low-intervention enology, and crafting wines they loved to drink. Before long, they were supplementing more vineyards and discovering that their project had started to take on a life of its own.

For this particular Sauvignon Blanc, James and Lorenza departed Napa to source fruit from further afield. The Evina Vineyard is located in Contra Costa County, about an hour southwest of Napa in a warmer subregion mitigated by the cool breezes of the Sacramento River Delta watershed. Vineyard owner Tom Morgan farms his parcel entirely by hand, and the naturally sandy content of the soil reduces the vigor of the vines, leading to good complexity. This is a flinty, crisp reflection of California Sauvignon Blanc made entirely using the seductively aromatic Musqué clone. After being gently harvested, the grapes were whole bunch-pressed, and the juice was fermented in a mix of neutral and new French oak barrels. The wine went through full malolactic fermentation and was aged on the lees for seven months, resulting in a softer, creamier rendition of a traditional Sauvignon Blanc. Aromas of kiwi, cherry blossom, and Bosc pear with hints of fresh bay leaf emerge from the rim of the glass. Deftly balanced flavors of citrus, white cherry, and melon lead to a crisp finish of lemon rind and white grapefruit. The Tarot card-inspired line drawing on the label was designed by the London illustrator, and dabbler in mysticism, William Horton at the turn of the last century. There is no need for a fairy tale ending for James and Lorenza, as the story of their love and label continues thereafter..
